Module 1: Creating a 'Gen Mixer' Work Environment

Successfully Blending Generational Differences in Today’s Workforce

Andy Small talks about the benefits of generational diversity within an organization.

The American workplace today is unique to another point in history. The reason for this is for the first time it is comprised of four distinct generations. Identifying the four generations and their different perceptions of attitudes toward work, values, expectations from management, communication patterns, as well as work hours are addressed in this training segment.

Suggestions on how your organizational leaders can use this diversity to enrich relationships and collaboration between each generation is offered.

Topics of discussion include the following:

  • Identifying the four generations and discussing their distinct characteristics – Traditionalists, Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials.
  • Generations at Work. Their approach to their workplace. For example Traditionalists often value fairness, impartiality, and a belief in mediation rather than direct confrontation. While on the other hand Boomers are service oriented and driven to please others. They are good at creating harmonious relationships and are strong team players. Most Gen Xers are adaptable and independent. They prefer to be left alone to perform on their own terms. Millennials are competent at multitasking and are goal oriented. Many predict that Millennials will experience as many as 10 career changes in their lifetime.
  • Working with the Generational Mix. Many of the challenges faced by these four generations in the workplace are authority, work ethic, management expectations, and a dress/work atmosphere.
  • Developing a successful outcome. Workers from different generations bring their own strengths, beliefs, and attitudes to the workplace. When nourished, sensitivity to these differences can create a more harmonious environment, and overall effectiveness.

It is believed that "the most successful people in the twenty-first century will be true 'Gen-Mixers', people of all ages who bring to work every day their enthusiasm, flexibility, and strong desire to learn".
